What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

If you’ve seen “CDCP” pop up lately and wondered what it means — here’s the simple version:

It’s a federal program that helps Canadians without dental insurance get the care they need at little or no cost. Think of it as a helping hand for anyone who’s been putting off the dentist because of price.

Since June 2025, the CDCP now covers all age groups — kids, adults, and seniors.
If you don’t have coverage through work, school, or a private plan, you may qualify for
free or reduced-cost dental care.

Qualify for Free or Reduced-Cost Care

If you don’t have dental insurance, you may already qualify for CDCP coverage.
Here’s what the government looks at:

1. You don’t have access to dental insurance.

2. You’ve filed your taxes.

3. Your household income is under $90,000.

4. You’re Canadian resident for tax purposes.

Essential care that’s typically covered

The CDCP helps cover most basic and necessary dental services — things that keep your mouth healthy and prevent costly issues later. Cosmetic procedures like whitening, veneers, and most orthodontic work (e.g., braces) aren’t part of standard coverage.

Not sure if you qualify?

Most people are surprised to find they do.
When you book your appointment, our team can quickly confirm your eligibility and explain your coverage — no paperwork, no guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really have to go to the Dentist frequently?

How often you go for dental exams depends on your oral health needs. The goal is to catch small problems early. For many people, this means a dental exam every six months. Your dentist may suggest that you visit more or less often depending on how well you care for your teeth and gums, problems you have that need to be checked or treated, how fast tartar builds up on your teeth, and so on.

Do I need x-rays at each visit?

How often you need to have x-rays also depends on your oral health. A healthy adult who has not had cavities or other problems for a couple of years probably won't need x-rays at every appointment. If your dental situation is less stable and your dentist is monitoring your progress, you may require more frequent x-rays.

How can I get my records transferred?

Original dental records belong to the dentist who provided the treatment, and not the patient, because dentists have to keep all of their records for a period of time, as set out by their provincial dental regulatory body. Once you have selected a new dentist, you can request that a copy of your records be transferred from your former dentist.
